Documentary and art photography crossover exhibition attempts to portray alternate realities of war

The work of number of photographers and artists that, in various direct or indirect ways, deal with the Iraq and Afghanistan war were collected together for the late 2010 exhibition late “Bringing the War Back Home” at Impressions Gallery. The works blur the boundaries between documentary photography and art, often manipulating common images of the war to present a view different from that given by photojournalists. Artists include: Farhad Ahrarnia, Sama Alshaibi, Lisa Barnard, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Edmund Clark, Kay May, Asef Ali Mohammad, Christopher Sims, Peter van Agtmael. Continue reading

Malaysian artist Yee I-Lann mixes batik and photography in “Boogeyman” exhibition

“Boogeyman” is Malaysian artist Yee I-Lann’s attempt to document and explore the notion of the Orang Besar, a Southeast Asian term used to describe those members of the socio-political and economic elite in the area. Cai Guo-Qiang’s largest gunpowder drawings to date at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston opened to public this October

Celebrated for his “gunpowder drawings,” in which different types and colors of gunpowder are ignited against a surface, creating ethereal and smoky images, Cai Guo-Qiang executed “Odyssey”, the largest gunpowder drawing he has ever made to date, on the span of 42 panels totaling 10 by 162 feet, commissioned by Museum of Fine Art Houston (MFAH) early this October.
