Art so fresh it’s still wet at Contemporary Istanbul – video

VernissageTV has produced an insightful video on November’s Contemporary Istanbul 2010 where interviews with five gallery representatives are combined with shots of the fair hall. The video highlights, among other things, the growing sophistication of attending collectors and the freshness of the works being presented for sale. Ou Ning on Get it Louder – new voice in China’s visual arts scene

The third edition of “Get It Louder” (GIL), perhaps one of the most ambitious Chinese exhibitions representing emerging young talent across multiple fields, ran from 19 September to 7 November this year in Beijing and Shanghai. Indonesian ethnicity on display in national gallery show

“Ethnicity Now”, held at the Indonesian National Gallery in December this year, was expected to be a “small step towards cultivating … pride in an Indonesian art that is rooted in local culture and tradition.” It has, however, been followed by mixed reviews. Some say the Indonesian-made artwork in the exhibition failed to reflect or emphasis the show’s title. Others were impressed by the brilliance, uniqueness and diversity of the display. Groundbreaking art from East or West? Top art professionals debate at Saatchi

Art enthusiasts and those at the top of the art profession gathered on 11 November at The Saatchi Gallery to witness “The Most Ground Breaking Contemporary Art is from the East”. This debate, organised by Intelligence Squared, a global forum for live debate that is dedicated to producing knowledge through contest, explored the growth of Eastern economies and its effect on the globalised art market. And sitting among the audience was Art Radar, armed with a tape recorder and notepad, busy getting the information we pass onto you now.

Filipino emerging artist named Yumbassador

Art in the Philippines never sounded so good. When you hear the word “Yum” you usually think of food. But a Filipino fast food chain seems to have a different kind of “Yum” in mind. Launched in October this year, the Jollibee Yumbassadors is an effort of Jollibee Foods Corporation to give back to the food loving Filipino community by means of youth empowerment emphasising Filipino individuality. And with the inclusion of Nasser Lubay in the Yumbassador roster of nine, it seems that the company views contemporary artists as particularly inspirational. Continue reading

Early critic response favours Anish Kapoor India show

Of Anish Kapoor’s Delhi-Mumbai show, which opened in November this year, we could have expected nothing short of praiseworthy. The artist, however, seemed humbled: “A return is always going to be difficult – quite frightening, actually.” Although his installations and sculptures can be found literally around the globe, it is his first time to showcase his pieces in his native India.
