Global recognition for Korean contemporary art? Not quite

According to an article published in The Korea Times at the end of October this year, Korean contemporary art began to make its presence felt on the global art market in 1995. This was the year that the official Korean Pavilion appeared at Venice Biennale and the Gwangju Biennale debuted. The article states that since this time Korean art has been quietly rising through increasing promotion at international art fairs and major art exchanges with Western countries. Continue reading

Para/Site bring Indonesian moving image to Hong Kong – Record Waves exhibition

“Recorded Waves: Moving Images from Indonesia” began at Para/Site Art Space in Hong Kong in November this year. Curated by Para/Site’s Executive Director and Curator Alvaro Rodríguez Fominaya, the exhibition displays an assemblage of examples of the development of video art in Indonesia. It is presented simultaneously with “Jompet.Third Realm”, a solo exhibition of work by celebrated Indonesian artist Kuswidananto aka Jompet.

New fair Art Stage Singapore announces 100+ list of gallery participants

Art Stage Singpore has released the names of galleries and artists that will be attending the art fair in January next year. This event is new to Singapore and aims to bring together artists, art professionals and collectors from the West and East while also focussing attention on art from surrounding regions. Cemeti moves on from Landing Soon with new residency programme

After eleven successful Landing Soon residency projects, a three year exchange programme run by Indonesian art space Cemeti Art House in collaboration with Heden in The Hague, Netherlands, Cemeti Art House has refreshed its residency programmes which are now open to artists, curators and researchers.

Second Hong Kong sound art event celebrates silence – event alert

“Sound Friction No2: The Zen Ensemble” is part two in a series of sound art events being held in Hong Kong under the banner of Sound Friction. According to the organisers, experimental record label Re-Records and Videotage, a non-profit new media organisation, artists in The Zen Ensemble will be exploring “the composition and performance of silence” matched with “stunning live visuals.” The event is free to attend and hopes to attract “electronics and sound art lovers.”

Syria stifles homegrown artists – New York Times

Ayyam Gallery agent Sharon Othman claims “Syria is moving toward a very bright future.” Hers is, however, the only positive comment in The New York Times’ November feature on the state of the Syrian art and design. Reporter Michael Kimmelman claims Damascus has two approaches to art, and neither is promising to its artists.
