[...] Art Radar’s 16 most searched Asian artists from July-December 2011. It looks like Ai Weiwei was number one but they also reported a surge in searches for Korean artists (I hope thats not just me doing thesis research!). Lee Yong-baek was number 8 on the list, I am in the midst of writing a chapter on him.
Unfortunately, this onion has many layers. A true graffiti artist will know that bombing is just as an essential part of graf as is piecing.. The issue we face is that some people just choose to “bomb” and others are more into the artistic side (know as piecing). When we would paint trains back in the 80's – there were nights when we were only in the mood to do 10 second throw-ups – then we had nights were 7 hour burners were on the menu. To be well rounded – you need to dominate to some extent every layer in this onion. Nowadays, the risks are much greater as we are older - so we enjoy the fun of a legal wall. But it isnt the same to be honest, there is always going to be that itch to flood a homemade and bomb insides....

Thank you for your kind response, Hermann. Hopefully these trends of transparency and direct communication between artist and public will continue around Asia. We're thrilled that we are able to provide clear information that assists all art professionals in navigating the contemporary art market. What other kinds of articles would you like to see published on Art Radar?

Thank you for your comment. Although graffiti and street art have gained respect in the art world in recent years, the practice remains a highly disputed medium of self-expression. The problem persists that some still see little technical distinction between inspirational, well-crafted graffiti artwork and the more common, destructive ‘tags’ which often have negative messages.

As an artist, do you see these types of graffiti as fundamentally different, one as legitimate artistic expression and another as a nuisance? Where should communities draw the line in regards to accepting or tolerating thoughtful, skillfully executed graffiti art?

These are tough questions with no easy answer!

Loved this series of articles. This final one: avenues of communication between all involved in art, affected me the most. It gave me some insights into how art in the 21st Century might begin to evolve ... positively, by involving people directly, and so bypass the hegemony of 'market forces' (especially here in Japan, where artists have to pay for gallery space -in order to show their work- and gallery owners do nothing, expecting the 'customers' to just turn up). It also gave me hope that there will come a time when it will be possible to get work out to a much wider audience (without having to find -and then get locked into- a gallery which limits the amount of dialogue between artists and art lovers). Excellent work, Art Radar!
