Course structure

The Diploma course has a very simple structure of four certificate courses specially designed like a ladder so you can take one after another, like climbing rungs. You start with Certificate 101 and progress through to Certificate 104.

We think this unique approach works because you master skills one step at a time; at each stage you’ll face increasingly difficult challenges. Whether you’re a novice writer or have some experience already, you’ll develop your range of skills and add to your portfolio of published articles.

The beauty of this system is that you have a great deal of flexibility. You can stop after Certificate 101 and you have an achievement you can be proud of, a certificate for your resume and your first piece of published writing to show off. However, if you want to carry on climbing the rungs towards the full Diploma you can take the remaining courses at any time during a 24 month period. That means you can take a break, or do an internship or special project, and then tackle the next rung.

Your first published writing

Aim of the course: To learn the nuts and bolts of putting together your first art news article. With an editor’s one-on-one help, your first article will be published. The course material will give you a broad introduction to the principal elements of strong writing, an essential base for developing specific techniques later in the Diploma course. There are plenty of how-to tips which you can use immediately to improve your writing dramatically.

Expanding your repertoire

Aim of the course: To build confidence by researching and writing up to two articles that will be published. You’ll also take your first steps in working with online publishing and editing software. This course focuses squarely on the techniques of art news writing and at the end of this course you’ll be ready to become an official Art Radar writer with behind-the-scenes access to our publishing platform and staff.

Building your portfolio

Aim of the course: To deepen your understanding of writing news-based articles and solidify your skills by building your portfolio with two more published stories. Students will become official representatives of Art Radar and will gain behind-the-scenes access to the publishing platform and the opportunity to connect with staff and peers.

Course duration: 13 weeks
Time per week: 4 to 8 hours

Researching and pitching your stories

Aim of the course: After completing the previous three modules students are ready to write stories based on original material and their own research and interviews. Students will be expected to represent Art Radar on assignments, an experience that will mimic the life of a working journalist.

Time per week: 4 to 8 hours

Course outline: 6 training modules delivered fortnightly online
