Can I choose the topics that I write on?

Because this is an entry-level writing course, and because the course attempts to model the workload of a “real” journalist, students are required to write on the topics assigned to them by their editor. A student’s knowledge, interests and location will be taken into consideration, but expect that the story or stories that you will write during this course will be outside of your immediate area of interest or your region. We believe that this approach broadens the experience of our writers and allows them, with the benefit of fresh eyes and new insight, to focus on developing their research and writing skills.
