Taiwan digital art in rare established Paris gallery showing

Exhibition “False Friends/An Ephemeral Video Library” marks the first time Taiwanese digital art has been showcased in an established Paris gallery. Three Taiwanese artists, Ming-Yu Lee, Wu Shang Lin and Chia Wei Hsu, are among 24 international artists whose video-based works are on display in the city’s Jeu de Paume.

Art Radar Asia has put together a list of this year’s biggest-selling Asian artists, compiled from the Artprice Annual Report (2009/2010). Out of the 500 international contemporary artists named by Artprice, 238 come from Asia. With artists like Yifei Chen (China), Anish Kapoor (India) and Takashi Murakami (Japan) topping the list, the results of this report are a testament to the continued growth of the Asian art market. Art enthusiasts and those at the top of the art profession gathered on 11 November at The Saatchi Gallery to witness “The Most Ground Breaking Contemporary Art is from the East”. This debate, organised by Intelligence Squared, a global forum for live debate that is dedicated to producing knowledge through contest, explored the growth of Eastern economies and its effect on the globalised art market. Global recognition for Korean contemporary art? Not quite

According to an article published in The Korea Times at the end of October this year, Korean contemporary art began to make its presence felt on the global art market in 1995. This was the year that the official Korean Pavilion appeared at Venice Biennale and the Gwangju Biennale debuted. The article states that since this time Korean art has been quietly rising through increasing promotion at international art fairs and major art exchanges with Western countries. Continue reading
Christie’s matches Sotheby’s in Hong Kong autumn auction success – coverage round-up

“The Perfect Storm” is what Christie’s International CEO Steven Murphy called the company’s Hong Kong Autumn 2010 auctions that ended on 2 December. The auctions resulted in a total of USD414 million in revenue from art and collectables sales which is a 95 percent increase from last year. Chinese auction houses climb worldwide revenue rankings – Artprice

Apparently oblivious to the recession, the Chinese art market posted its best-ever six-month auction earnings in the second half of 2009. Reflecting the rising importance of the Middle Kingdom in the world economy, China’s auction houses are claiming more and more spots in the world’s top 10 by revenue. Pakistani artist Rashid Rana, 42 is exhibiting twenty-seven sculptures and photomontages in his retrospective called “Perpetual Paradox” at the Musée Guimet in Paris.
