The short answer

Digital art uses digital technology as a meaningful part of making or presenting an artwork. It can be a drawing made in software, a coded system, a computer-generated image, an interactive work, a web-based piece or a physical output from a digital process. To understand one, identify the files, process, required hardware and software, display behaviour, version and artist-approved presentation—not just what appears on a screen.

That definition is broad because the field is broad. The Victoria and Albert Museum describes digital art as creative practices that use digital technologies to produce artworks, including coding, 3D modelling and digital drawing. It also notes that a digital work may remain in digital media, become a physical object, operate interactively or be accessed remotely.

“Digital” therefore describes a material and procedural condition, not one look. A quiet monochrome print and a responsive installation can both belong under the term while sharing almost nothing visually.

Digital art is more than an image file

Sometimes the primary artistic object is a file: a still image, animation or video. Sometimes a file is one component in a larger system. Code may generate changing output; a sensor may supply input; a browser may provide the environment; a projector, printer or LED structure may turn data into a visible form.

Ask which of these is essential to the work:

The museum record should lead. Do not assume that a downloadable image is the complete work, or that a screenshot preserves an interactive piece. The visible output may be one performance of a system rather than a fixed master image.

Read the process before naming the category

“Made on a computer” says very little about what an artist did. Look for the actual operation. Was an image drawn with a stylus? Was a photograph scanned and transformed? Did code select or generate forms? Was a three-dimensional model fabricated as a physical object? Does the work respond to a participant or update from a network?

The V&A’s digital art and design dictionary separates several processes rather than collapsing them into one category. It describes digital art made through software and hardware, including coding, 3D modelling and digital drawing, and notes that such work can be translated into physical materials.

One documented example makes the distinction visible. The V&A identifies Ben Laposky’s Oscillon 40 (1952) as its earliest digital artwork. The museum says Laposky used an oscilloscope to manipulate electronic signals and photographed the resulting wave forms; its collection object is a photographic print. The physical output matters, but so does the electronic process that produced the image.

That example does not establish one origin story for every digital practice. It shows why “print” and “digital art” can both describe the same object at different levels.

Separate the file, the output and the display

A useful first reading divides the work into three layers.

The file or system

What digital material exists? It might be an image file, source code, executable program, 3D model, database, recorded media or a set of instructions. Record the terms supplied by the artist or institution. File extensions and screenshots alone rarely establish the complete structure.

The output

What does the system produce? The answer could be one fixed image, a sequence, changing forms, printed sheets, light, sound or a participant’s experience. Note whether the output repeats exactly, changes within limits or depends on live input.

The display

What turns that output into the encountered work? A screen, projector, browser, printer, headset, speaker, custom enclosure or gallery architecture may be necessary. Ask whether the particular device is part of the work or whether an approved substitute can perform its role.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating the monitor as a neutral frame. In some works it may be replaceable display equipment; in others its proportions, light, controls or physical presence contribute to identity. Only the documentation can tell you which.

What does iteration mean?

Digital processes make duplication easy, but duplication and identity are not the same question. A file can be copied exactly while the software environment, display, data source or authorised presentation changes. Conversely, a work may migrate to new equipment while a museum tries to preserve its defining behaviour.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Media Lab identifies obsolescence as a conservation challenge for time-based media. It explains that migration to new technology may be needed when equipment cannot be repaired or replaced, and that conservators balance technical possibilities, the specifics of the work and the artist’s intentions.

An “iteration” can mean a documented presentation of a work at a particular place and time. For Doug Aitken’s SONG 1 (2012), the Smithsonian records a commissioned site-specific installation using seven-channel video, eleven projectors and a 35-minute loop on the Hirshhorn’s curved exterior. Its preservation documentation included equipment specifications, wiring and architectural diagrams, communication records and video of software navigation. The files alone did not describe the installation.

Do not use “version,” “edition,” “copy” and “iteration” as though they are interchangeable. Use the artist’s, gallery’s or collecting institution’s documented term and ask what it covers.

Digital art is not automatically time-based

Some digital works unfold over time, but a digitally created still image or physical print may not. The Smithsonian defines time-based media as art with a specific duration and includes film, video, digital, audio, computer-based, web-based, performance and installation art within that institutional field.

That umbrella describes the Smithsonian’s preservation work; it does not say every digital artwork has duration. To decide, ask whether sequence, change or elapsed time is essential to the encounter. A loop length, responsive delay or scheduled update is evidence. A screen by itself is not.

Digital art is also not a historical synonym for contemporary art. Technologies and institutions change, while “modern” and “contemporary” have their own art-historical uses. See contemporary versus modern art for that separate distinction.

How to look at digital art

Use six questions rather than searching for a single digital style.

1. What is happening?

Describe the output before interpreting it. Is the image fixed, looping, generative, live or responsive? Does it reset? Can two viewers receive different results?

2. What is the system doing?

Separate the artist’s inputs, rules and transformations from the resulting surface. If the mechanism is not published, leave it unknown rather than inventing an algorithm from appearance.

3. What can the viewer change?

Interaction may alter navigation, timing, viewpoint, sound or data. Test only through the controls the venue invites visitors to use. Do not access settings, cables, service panels or network connections.

4. What stays constant?

Look for recurring constraints: a fixed palette, bounded random choices, a defined sequence, one data source or an unchanging physical frame. Variation becomes readable when you can also identify its limits.

5. What does the display contribute?

Notice scale, brightness, pixel structure, projection surface, speaker position and the viewer’s route. Describe effects you can observe without guessing that a particular brand or resolution is artist-mandated.

6. What does the record say?

Read the medium line, date, edition or version statement, installation notes and curatorial text. Keep institutional facts separate from your own interpretation.

Authenticity is a documentation question

A visually identical file does not prove authorised status, edition membership, ownership or provenance. Nor does possession of a file establish permission to reproduce, sell, modify or exhibit it. Those are documentation and rights questions, not conclusions that can be drawn from pixels.

For a proposed acquisition, ask the relevant artist, gallery, institution or qualified adviser what constitutes the work. Depending on the documented practice, records may cover files, checksums, certificates, licences, source code, hardware, installation instructions, edition information, display rights and approved ways to migrate or replace components. This is a list of questions, not a universal package.

Do not treat technical novelty, file scarcity, a certificate or a particular delivery system as an investment signal. Art Radar does not authenticate, appraise or recommend digital artworks, and no display or preservation plan promises resale value.

Conservation means preserving behaviour and context

Digital storage is not passive. Files can be separated from their metadata, software can stop running, services can close and equipment can become obsolete. The Smithsonian’s preservation program treats acquisition, documentation, installation and display as connected problems.

Nam June Paik’s Video Flag provides a museum-documented example of this complexity. The Smithsonian describes repeated intervention as playback and display technologies aged, including migration from LaserDisc to DVD. Its later conservation involved physical assessment, display technology, electrical and fire-safety systems, ventilation, documentation and consultation across conservation, engineering, facilities and audiovisual specialists.

That account is not a set of home instructions. Do not open powered equipment, modify wiring, defeat ventilation, bypass software protections or improvise projector and overhead mounts. Electrical work, structural mounting and fire-system integration belong to licensed or appropriately qualified professionals following the artwork’s approved documentation.

If a collected work stops operating, record the failure state without altering original files or components. Preserve packaging, certificates, installation records and prior correspondence. Contact the artist or authorised representative and a qualified time-based media or digital-art conservator. Replacing a device or converting a file may alter the work even when the output looks similar.

Before interpreting a digital artwork, confirm what you know:

Digital art is not weightless art that happens to glow. It may include files, rules, machines, outputs, records and behaviours, with different parts carrying different significance. Read the whole arrangement before deciding what the work is doing.

Is every artwork displayed on a screen digital art?

No. A screen can display documentation or a reproduction of a work whose defining process is not digital. Check the institutional record for how digital technology functions in making or presenting the actual artwork, and whether the display device is essential or replaceable.

Is digital art always time-based or interactive?

No. Some digital artworks unfold, respond or update over time, while others are fixed images or physical prints produced through digital processes. Duration and interaction should be established from the work’s documented behaviour, not assumed from the presence of software or a screen.

Can I preserve digital art by copying its file?

A verified copy may be one preservation component, but it may not preserve required software, hardware, metadata, display behaviour, rights or installation instructions. Keep the complete documentation and consult the artist or authorized representative and a qualified digital-art or time-based media conservator before migrating files or replacing equipment.
